Clinic Participation

ColdWater CVITP is not a registered charity or other entity, but was created as a rallying point for like-minded, individual CVITP volunteers to come together to show a glimpse of God’s love in serving our neighbours in Cambridge, Ontario and surrounding areas.

ColdWater’s vision is to help eligible individuals in need who qualify for tax help under the CVITP program during filing season, and is our way of offering a ‘cup of cold Eligibility Criteriawater’ to those who could use it! Volunteers may or may not have an accounting background, but all go through the same basic volunteer training (provided by CRA) to complete returns using UFile software, as well as completing compulsory police record checks.

Virtual (Phone) Clinic Format:

This particular tax clinic operates virtually through using a combination of phone and online services to complete and E-File returns. In lieu of in-person identity verification and written consents via Form TIS-60, the virtual clinic replaces these methods by relying on verbal consents to spoken disclaimers. Identity verification is completed by downloading taxpayer information from CRA (after filing an electronic “Authorization Request”) and comparing it with existing T-Slips. For those who may feel more comfortable with paper-in-hand, a walk-in clinic format may be a better fit. Please refer to CRA’s “Find a Tax Clinic in Your Area” to find the clinic nearest you.

Cold Water will be operating virtually by phone, using CRA’s ‘Auto-Fill-My-Return’ service for the 2023 tax season. Eligible participants will need to have their S.I.N. and a copy of at least one T-slip available during their appointment. Couples returns filing jointly requires both spouses to be present.

Preparing for your appointment:

The following list includes includes (but is not limited to) helpful questions to ensure your volunteer has the information needed to prepare your tax return:

  • How many tax years do you need me to prepare for you? For which years?
  • Do you have any family members, such as a spouse or common-law partner, who must also prepare their tax return?
  • Do you have a child or other dependant? How many? What age(s)?
  • Have you, your spouse or dependant(s) (if applicable) been approved for the disability Tax Credit (DTC)?
  • How many sources of income did you have this year? For example, multiple employers and interest income.
  • Has your living situation changed within the last year? This may include a change in marital status, address or dependants (custody change, adoption, additional dependants)?
  • Did you earn any tips?
